Often Asked Questions About Mugs + Tumblers

is my drinkware food safe?

YES!

Each is first painted with alcohol ink and then sprayed to ensure color fastness. Then it is coated with a completely non-toxic sealant' so that it is food safe. This final sealant is not harmful, and is completely FDA compliant.

Is my drinkware microwave safe?

tumblers: no!

your tumbler is made of stainless steel. do not ever put metal, of any kind, in your microwave.

MUGS: YES!

Many people ask about this since many dish items with metallic paint accents are not safe in the microwave, however, the metallic alcohol ink paints that I use do not contain any actual metals. So don’t worry if you’re like me and constantly let your cup get cold, pop that baby in the microwave and get back to business!

How about the dishwasher?

NO for all drinkware!

While the inks on every mug have been sealed to ensure that they are food safe and will not rub off, they should never be put in the dishwasher. Doing so will cause the outer seal to peel off and expose the toxic inks underneath. If your mug does go through the dishwasher (yikes!), or the outer sealant begins to peel for any reason, it will no longer be safe to use and would be purely be ornamental at that point.

follow up question… how do I clean my drinkware?

As a rule, all hand-painted items should be hand-washed. That includes everything from hand-painted wine glasses to hand-painted silk scarves, and therefore also your mug. Yes, your mug is functional, but it’s important to remember that it’s still a one-of-a-kind piece of art. You should be able to clean your mug easily with just a soft cloth and mild dish soap, even if used every day. If the inside needs deep cleaning for any reason (did you make oatmeal?), you may soak the inside only with mild soap, but you should NEVER SOAK the outside of your mug.

OK, what if someone (not me, of course) accidentally runs it through the dishwasher?

Oops! Well, that’s not good. If your mug or tumbler goes through the dishwasher, the top sealant will likely be compromised and your drinkware will no longer be food safe. DO NOT USE IT FOR FOOD OR DRINK AGAIN ONCE THIS HAPPENS, it is now just ornamental. Consider rehoming an air plant or succulent, or using it as a vase. I know accidents happen, so if this tragedy does befall you, email me with a photo and you’ll receive 25% off your next mug purchase.
